Geoff Thomas: The Holy Spirit – Chapter 14: “The Spirit Buries Our Misdeeds and Intercedes for Us”
Opening verses: Romans 8
“Romans 8 is probably the greatest chapter in this epistle. Along with Ephesians 1, these two chapters are some of the
most majestic pieces in the New Testament. Romans 8 is particularly important for us because of its observations on
the person and work of the Holy Spirit. Let us focus on three themes in this chapter: the Holy Spirit leads us, buries
our misdeeds, and intercedes for us.” Pg. 153
THE HOLY SPIRIT LEADS US Pages. 153-157
The leading of this Spirit may be viewed in the following ways:
1. This Spirit originates from heaven.
2. This leading is not experienced only by super-Christians.
3. The Spirit leads us not to enable us to escape the difficulties, dangers, trials, or sufferings of this life, but
specifically to conquer sin.
4. This leading of the Spirit is a continuous work
5. The Spirit does not teach us to let go so the Spirit does the work for us.
6. The Spirit leads us according to the teaching of the Bible.
THE HOLY SPIRIT BURIES OUR MISDEEDS Pages. 157-161
“The Bible says the Christian is delivered from the dominion of sin by the Holy Spirit. The Spirit is the Christian’s
new master and king. Sin is no longer his lord; the believer has been freed from sin’s insistent commands to satisfy its
lusts.” Pg. 157-158
1. The Spirit convinces you of sin.
2. The Spirit reveals the power of Christ to deliver you.
3. The Spirit sustains you in expecting help from Christ to overcome sin. (Romans 6:5-7)
4. The Spirit fixes Calvary in your heart with sin-killing power.
5. The Spirit is the author and finisher of our sanctification.
A. The Spirit puts to death our sin, first, by using the law of God.
B. The Spirit puts to death the energies and restless ambitions of sin by making us increasingly conscious that true life is found only in Jesus Christ
THE HOLY SPIRIT INTERCEDES FOR US
Romans 8:26–27 tells us the Spirit helps us in our weakness, specifically in praying.
As George Rawson (1807–1889) so beautifully wrote,
Gentle, awful, holy guest,
Make Thy temple in our breast,
There supreme to reign and rest,
Comforter divine.
In us, for us, intercede,
And with voiceless groanings plead
Our unutterable need,
Comforter divine.
