This morning, I found myself in a moment where my mind was making mountains out of molehills (note to self: it's 2023, is there a more current way to say this? 😜)
As I was sitting in my meditation practice (which in reality is just me noticing my thoughts with some light music in the background) I felt anxious and overwhelmed around the tasks that were coming up next...the things I needed to get done...the 'lack of time' I felt that I had.
I was in a moment of discomfort and I knew I had 2 choices:
1) I could 'save myself' from the experience, turn off the music, and move forward with one of the tasks on my plate.
2) I could challenge myself to stay in the discomfort and give myself an opportunity to prove to myself that I had more time & space than what I thought I did.
I decided to make it an experiment & choose option #2.
"What happens if I keep myself uncomfortable?"
Here's the thing:
Our mind tends to make a big deal out of tasks and obligations that we perceive will take a lot of time and energy. And since we're so over-stimulated already, it can be easier to either take away time that we could use to refresh ourselves (like my morning meditation) and step into 'doing'...
...or, we can find ourselves in major cycles of procrastination that stress us the hell out anyway (speaking from experience).
I wonder how our lives might improve this week if we allowed ourselves to be uncomfortable for a little bit longer in order to see what came out on the other side?
What if our mind is making more mountains than it needs to? What if we're able to climb those mountains with more ease because we did the uncomfortable thing?
