In episode 43 of the INTOCHANGE Podcast, host Ben Lowe delves deep into his tumultuous relationship with substance. Ben spent the better part of eight years consumed by drug addiction, primarily to ice, and had several stints in prison.
He shares his turning point, which wasn’t the time he spent behind bars, but rather the harrowing realization of his lost sense of self outside of his drug dependency. While drugs once gave Ben a sense of community and significance, they eventually became a crutch that hindered his growth and happiness. Despite escaping the grasp of meth, he still found himself spiraling due to other substances, always pointing the finger at external circumstances for his discontentment.
However, a transformative moment occurred when he acknowledged that his relationship with drugs and alcohol was the root cause of his problems. From then on, Ben began distancing himself from that lifestyle, choosing personal growth over temporary highs.
He discusses the concept of the pretend, negative, and authentic selves, advocating for the embracing of one's authentic identity.
Now, with a healthier perspective on substance use, he encourages listeners to introspect, evaluate their substance dependencies, and reach out if they need guidance.
