Danny: [00:00:00] Hello, my name is Danny and I went to welcome you all to my new podcast. Titled inclusive cyber. Unlocking DEI in cybersecurity. I'm super excited about this opportunity and I'm sure you're asking though, why do we need another podcast on cybersecurity? I know there are a lot of great podcasts that I personally listened to, which dive into the many challenges within cybersecurity. To secure our personal and company sensitive data. But the only scrape the surface of the myriad DEI challenges in our profession. This podcast will be 100% dedicated to the global DEI initiatives. Cybersecurity and best practices. I'll be exploring the intersection of diversity, equity and inclusion. And cybersecurity. I'll chat with DEI thought leaders both in and out of cybersecurity. To get a holistic [00:01:00] perspective on the challenges and highlight wins within the DEI space.
First, I want to talk about what I mean, when I say DEI. We'll look at challenges and wins faced by women, people of color, LGBTQ +, and neurodivergent. Now, if we are to believe we have a massive skill shortage gap within cybersecurity, which stands at 3.4 million unfilled global positions. Then the logical question is why? Why do we have this shortage? We'll tackle this challenge by questioning everything. That will hopefully lead us to the root cause of this massive shortage. I personally believe this shortage gap is attributed to the lack of DEI representation within cybersecurity. Let's just look at the stats: 9% African American black. 8% [00:02:00] Asian. 4% Hispanic, Latino. And 1% American Indian, Alaskan native. Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander. 24% are women. That being said, all topics and discussions will be on the table. We'll look into the following topics and this is not an exhaustive list. Pay discrepancies for women and people of color. Do we need a college degree to get into cyber? Are certifications hurting or helping our profession? Is there racism at play? What key teams should be involved in recruiting and hiring practices. My company doesn't need any DEI initiatives. We're doing just fine. What is more important in hiring, technical skills or life skills? Meaning. Critical thinking, effective communication and empathy. [00:03:00] Are we recruiting from historically black college and universities. And Hispanic serving institutions?
