In this intro episode, Ka'Lei and Carla share their Genre Refusals, explaining why they would avoid all movies within such genres excluding one.
▪ [00:54] Today's focus is Genre refusals; movies that our hosts would never watch simply based on the genre. For Ka'Lei, the first would be Straight-to-DVD Action Movies, like The Last Man which is a generic espionage revenge movie with kidnapping, the typical stripper scene, the double-crossing, and explosions. Ka'Lei also observed how some popular actors show up on posters of these movies but only after the forefront a few scenes into the movie. This is a typical generic movie that Ka'Lei can neither watch nor recommend.
▪ [06:58] Carla's genre refusal is Demon Horror. Although she has seen good ones like The Exorcist, The Exorcism of Emily Rose, The Conjuring, and others, she gets uncomfortable watching them because they are quite terrifying and realistic. The movie "Skinamarink" is a psychological demon horror movie recommended by Ka'Lei; it is unique and directed in a nonconventional manner to bring back the feeling of being alone in your house.
