My guest, Michelle Steiner, defies the limitations and stigma associated with having a learning disability. She has overcome challenges in math, visual perception, and hand dexterity by embracing her unique brain wiring. Michelle highlights that the real struggle lies in societal misconceptions rather than the disability itself.
Growing up in a conservative rural community, Michelle faced rejection and a lack of acceptance due to her differences. She struggled to fit in socially and academically, facing challenges with both learning support and neurotypical peers. Despite low expectations, Michelle pursued higher education, defying suggestions to attend a trade school.
Through community college and a university program in special education services, Michelle graduated with determination, aided by disability accommodations like extended test time and note-taking assistance. Today, as a paraeducator, she supports students with disabilities, encouraging self-advocacy and empowerment.
Michelle's story inspires others to break free from predetermined boxes, promoting creative problem-solving and embracing a fulfilling life beyond societal expectations.
