In today’s episode, Cooper & Ian will be discussing Robert Smalls. Robert Smalls was a remarkable African American figure in the 19th century who escaped slavery during the Civil War by commandeering a Confederate ship and delivering it to Union forces. After his daring escape Robert became an advocate for African American rights, lobbied for the enlistment of black soldiers, and was elected to the South Carolina State Legislature and the U.S. House of Representatives, making him one of the first black congressmen. Throughout his life, he tirelessly fought for civil rights and equality, leaving a lasting legacy as a symbol of resilience and determination.
