This week on The Safe Room, we discussed the one topic that brought some attention to me and how we may see plans to implement this proposal sooner than later, increasing the minimum wage. Andrea Horwath wants to raise the minimum wage to $20 by 2026 to provide equality in compensation for workers in Canada. I go over the implications for establishing this model in today's society and why they shouldn't proceed with this plan. Evaluating both perspectives, we critically analyze the role of employment (increased or stagnation), local businesses and their organizational structures, plus the hierarchies in occupations that require low skill and high skill. But an important question to ask is if the current status of the minimum wage is the issue we should be addressing? Or is it the lack of accessibility to find higher-wage jobs for people, especially racialized minorities in our communities?
