Description

In this episode, we're joined by M. Shawn Kooyman, P.E., the Senior Regional Director for Ducks Unlimited (DU) in Eastern Virginia. With a passion for conservation, Mr. Kooyman oversees the commendable efforts of over 1,000 DU volunteers in Virginia. Their primary mission? To organize fundraising events that champion the conservation of wetlands and vital habitats for Virginia's migratory waterfowl. These conserved areas not only benefit the waterfowl but also other wildlife and the iconic Chesapeake Bay.

Shawn's dedication to the cause hasn't gone unnoticed. In 2022, he was honored as the National Regional Director of the Year for DU. But his journey with DU is vast and varied. Before his current role in Virginia, he served as a Regional Director in North Carolina and the South Atlantic Regional Engineer. In these roles, he lent his expertise in the survey, design, and construction of numerous wetland restoration projects across the South Atlantic Flyway.

Beyond his professional achievements, Mr. Kooyman is an academic at heart. He holds both Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Civil Engineering from the University of Toledo and is a licensed Civil Engineer in several states. When he's not working, Shawn, an enthusiastic sportsman, loves to immerse himself in the great outdoors, often accompanied by his family and two labs, Brant and Frisco.
