Key Takeaways:
- You can be very involved and good parents and still have a challenging child.
- As parents, we set the pace. We set the temperature for the room at that time and for the whole relationship.
- Awareness in parenting is key. Be aware of consistent situations, environments, or times of day that are triggering for you.
- Parenting is not an emergency. You don’t have to deal with each situation right now. What you need to deal with first is your emotions and regulating you first.
- The power of the pause is priceless. Recognizing “I need a moment,” because you can do damage if you don’t, and then you have to go repair that damage. Reflect on, “What are my goals in this situation?” My goal is to find peace. How can I find peace?
- Parents are the biggest teacher in their child’s life. They have the most impact. If you can teach your child at home what it’s like to have a good solid relationship, give kindness, show compassion, help others - these are the lessons that they will carry with them for life.
- As a mom, take care of yourself in the little moments of the day. Find something you can say to yourself that reminds you how much you’re loved. Listen to a favorite song that makes you feel good. Go outside and take a couple of breaths. Moms are expected to carry a lot, and you don’t have to do it all. It’s okay.
- If you’re experiencing challenges in parenting, it’s okay to ask for help. You’re not failing, in fact, you’re farther ahead than those who don’t.
