“Clear is kind. Unclear is unkind.” -Brené Brown

Collaboration is one of the really exciting things about being a creative, especially when these collaborations hold the opportunity to offer something new to your industry. With this, though, it can be intimidating trying to get a new project going with people you admire but haven’t really gotten to know yet. In this episode, we talk all about collaboration as it applies to commissions and consortiums, from points of contact to contracts to ROI.

When contemplating a commission, firstly, make sure your project aligns with your mission and your ‘why’: “Think about what you want to do, who you want to work with, and do your homework. Do your research on the pieces that have existed. Don’t just hire a composer because of their name. Make sure you like their music, make sure you like them, make sure you want to work with them and support them.”

After assessing the right fit for a commission, next come the contracts and communication. We’re always emphasizing the need for clarity throughout the process, and when it comes to commissioning, all parties need to feel satisfied and aware of expectations. This can be accomplished through contracts and open communication, always asking questions and taking inventory of your agreements.

Commissioning new works is a really exciting way to collaborate with other creatives and push the bounds of repertoire in the industry. Make sure it’s organized and clear so that your project can reward you, the composer, and the industry at large!
