Description

After a brief hiatus, Karen Cubides is back with Episode 19 of The Musician’s Guide to Being Healthy, Wealthy, and Wise. On this week’s episode, Karen gives listeners five important tools and techniques that they can use when they are feeling “stuck” at a point in their lives or careers.

1. Feel the Feelings. Many musicians and artists are accustomed to tough stages and rejection and have therefore built up walls and developed a thick skin. We need to learn to actually feel these feelings and accept that it’s okay not to feel okay. Karen suggests a technique that she uses in which she sets a timer and allows herself a short “pity party” to cry, yell, rant etc. Once the timer has ended, it’s time to get back to work and move forward with your plans and goals. We are all human and we all need a moment sometimes, otherwise emotions will pile up and result in things being blown out of proportion.

2. Reassess your health. Reassessing your physical and mental wellness can be a vital step into becoming unstuck. We need to ensure that instead of giving into our vices, we are setting ourselves up for success by evaluating how we are treating our bodies. I.e. Are we eating the best foods? Are we exercising on a regular basis.

3. Find your Passion. Find your “why”. Sometimes we need to go back to the basics and remember why we do the things that we do. Our worth comes from who we are not and not what we do. Our passion and our “why” for what we do will always be stronger than our circumstances.

4. Imagine your life without the things that stress you out. Karen reflects on working with her mentor and discusses an experiment in which, for two weeks, she tried to imagine her life without all of the things that make up her career and cause the most stress in her life as a whole. She asks if you would thrive without these things? It is easy to get bogged down and we forget why we started in the first place. This exercise could help us breath and realize that the life we have, we are living by choice. It may not be perfect but it’s what we love.

5. Reintroduce the Routine to Your Life. We all need to take a break from the grueling routine now and again but once we have recovered it is important to slowly introduce it back into your life and hit the ground running. Karen reminds us that we are the product and if we are faulty, things are not going to work out. We are the most important part of our brand!
