Kate Valentine (playwright/producer/choreographer/actor) is one of the instigators of the feminist neo-burlesque movement. Her show, the vaudeville extravaganza The Va Va Voom Room and her hilariously deadpan mistress of ceremonies character Miss Astrid rode a zeitgeist beginning in the mid 1990’s in Los Angeles. The popularity of The Va Va Voom Room hit its apex as a weekly variety show featuring hundreds of noted striptease dancers, musicians, and variety artists running at the beloved cabaret space Fez Under Time Café in NYC.
Now, as most of us Gen X-ers, Kate has entered midlife and is refusing to be quiet about it. Her new show A Woman Of A Certain Rage, is both entertainment and commentary about aging in a female body in an age of anxiety. It's funny. It's incendiary and you should definitely check it out.
Kate is smart, witty, delightful and inspiring. I'm thrilled to share this interview.
