This interview is probably the most personally meaningful one I have done yet.

Today I interviewed one of my first trumpet teachers.

Not only was he one of my first teachers, but he is also one of my first mentors.

And today, I get to share him with you.

Today John shares his experience with an injury that plagued him for over two decades, and how that impacted his performing career, and teaching career.

We talked about the importance of rest as a musician, as an injury recovery and prevention tool

We also talked about how he has found fulfillment in new ventures in his retirement from trumpet, and how a 50 year career in music has taught him patience and grace.

Among many other things we talked about, my takeaway from our conversation was:

“Turn this into a positive”

Takeaways

-Teaching can have an impact on a musician's career, but it can also be a fulfilling and sacred role, especially for students who may not have access to private lessons.
