Have you ever left a firing wondering what happened?
Firing can be a difficult and suuuper emotional experience, especially when it comes to letting go of friends and family. I often feel like I’m between a rock and a hard place - between my professional obligations and personal relationships with my team.
However, it's vital to know when it's the right time to let someone go. The reality of being a young boss is that you have to do what's best for your business, even if it means firing your ex-husband.
Here are my top four tips that will help you in these super awkward moments, here we go:
Set Clear Expectations It's vital to set clear expectations and standards upfront. This includes KPIs and core values you expect from your employees. When these expectations aren't met, you'll know it's time to let someone go.
Be Objective Don't let your feelings cloud your judgment. Remember, it's not personal – it's just business. If someone isn't making the cut, it's time to let them go, regardless of whether they're a friend, family member, or long-time employee.
Be Honest & Direct Be clear about the reasons why they're being let go, and make sure they understand what they could have done differently. This helps prevent any misunderstandings or resentment in the future.
Have A Transition Plan Ready Make sure you have someone ready to fill the role or a plan in place and that the rest of your team is aware of the changes. This helps minimize the disruption to your business and ensures a smooth transition.
Firing people sucks but it is what it is, it’s part of the game. How do you approach firing employees?
