Description

On January 10th, 1901, an event occurred in Beaumont that shook the ground, and shook the world.   A stream of oil shot up through the earth, and wasn't capped for 9 days.  At the time, it was the largest oil producing well in the world and it shocked all of those who felt the Gulf Coast held no oil reserves.   It was only through the persistent efforts of a handful of men and the support of their wives that the "black gold" was finally tapped at a depth of a little over 1,000 feet.

From this discovery, the modern petrochemical industry was born and life as we know it was changed forever.

In this episode we talk with Mrs. Geanna Summy, director of Spindletop Boomtown museum and she shares with us the history of this remarkable discovery.
