This is a very special episode of our podcast as it is the world premiere of a song and sermon collaboration! The song, "Paper Chain," is written and sung by Jack Gorham, while Dr. Ken adds the sermon between the verses.
This sermon/song is based on Ecclesiastes 3:1,6 - "For everything there is a season and a time for every purpose under heaven...a time to keep and a time to let go." It is also based on Philippians 3:10-14 - "I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the sharing of his sufferings by becoming like him in his death, if somehow I may attain the resurrection from the dead.Phil. Not that I have already obtained this or have already reached the goal; but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. Beloved, I do not consider that I have made it my own; but this one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the heavenly call of God in Christ Jesus."
This was recorded during worship at Rumple Memorial Presbyterian Church in Blowing Rock, NC. We thank them for letting us share this work, and we also want to explain that the voice track in the beginning is low, but it will become more audible over the first minute of the song.
Here are the words for the first verse and chorus:
The last few days of a paper chain
are hanging from the corner of the wall.
Been there for years, holding on
long after the days they were to fall.
Two points in the distance;
you barely see 'em.
Then fast approach the crossroads and you stop;
caught between your past and freedom.
No matter where you are it's hard to know,
there comes a time for letting go. (c) Jack Gorham 2024
