Description

HELENA SHORTER-ALSTON, BA, BS, MPIA. Chief Executive Officer, Chef, Food Science Technologist, and Business Development Consultant. Helena is the founding director and the inspiration behind Kai Vida Superfoods, LLC. She is a chef, researcher, and food technologist of 35 years who developed the formulas and recipes for the company’s innovative products. She is a former U.S. Peace Corps Volunteer (Senegal, West Africa) and global development consultant who specializes in food security. Helena holds two Bachelor’s Degrees and two Master’s Degrees from the University of Pittsburgh, speaks English, French and Spanish, and is a licensed certified food service vendor for the USDA Food and Nutrition Services Program. She has been a food service business owner and global development consultant for 35+ years and continues to serve as the creative mind behind Kai Vida’s dehydrated and shelf-stable food products with the assistance of a team of consulting chefs and certified nutritionists from Spain, France, and the United States.

An entrepreneur since the age of 9, she successfully started selling homemade cakes to help keep her financially distressed church open, and later went on to start her first Personal Chef catering business in Pittsburgh, PA in 1987. Shortly thereafter, she was invited to join a group of other investing chefs and opened her first restaurant in the Poconos, Pennsylvania in 1989. Having checked that accomplishment off her bucket list, she had an ardent desire to reach out and feed the multitudes of needy people. She sold the restaurant and went on to augment her studies in food science technology in Spain and France. With an eye on designing a line of delicious foods that are quick and easy to prepare, and that can be shared with the world, she designed and finalized the current collection of meals after founding Kai Vida Superfoods in 2015. Kai Vida superfoods offers delicious and nutritious feasts that can be prepared and eaten anywhere in the world by simply adding the universal ingredient of water.

Helena, also known as “Chef D,” has been a lifelong ambassador for sharing love through food and fellowship. Her mantra is that “as a highly favored and blessed child of God, my passion and what I believe is my God-given purpose in life is to feed people good and healthy food. In fact, the meaning of Kaí Vida Superfoods,” literally translates to “Good Food for a Good Life!”

Helena’s extensive resume includes more than four decades of work in national and global development initiatives. During that work she was confronted head on with multitudes of poor and hungry food insecure families living in food deserts. In a grassroots effort to address that food insecurity at its root cause, she established Kai Vida’s Global Village Kitchen division in 2017 and began providing nutritious meals to youth and the elderly in after-school, senior daycare and government sponsored summer feeding programs.
