Tonjua is a first time author of the book “Caring for those who Once Cared for You” (The Power of Self-care While Navigating the Caregiving Journey).
She began her role as a caregiver approximately three years ago for mom and her handicapped older sister-who she had to relocate from WV to New Jersey. After discovering the many pitfalls that come along with this role, and the difficulty in sometimes finding people and information needed to assist (especially as a black caregiver), she was prompted to start a movement by finding ways to begin sharing resources she found which led to writing her first book.
Tonjua is an advocate for those who care for their loved ones with an emphasis for those caring for loved ones with Dementia/Alzheimer. In her new journey of being an advocate for caregivers she will be offering emotional support resources and providing resources as it relates to this very serious topic. As she has also discovered the importance of taking care of self as well she has since found a support group called "The Binti Circle" (black daughters caring for mothers) and has recently participated in a research study called “Caregiving While Black” supported by the Emory Nursing College.
As she continue on the path of this new journey her goal is bring the role of caregiving more to the forefront - by speaking about it, writing about it and sharing resources that can help and support others struggling in the role of what to do next.
