Sydney Bell is a self taught multidisciplinary artist, metalsmith jewelry designer, entrepreneur and world traveler, born in Trenton, New Jersey. Bell began her entrepreneurial journey at age 13 when she started her first handmade beaded jewelry business “Syd Jewels" through the Minding Our Business program affiliated with Rider University where she was given the opportunity to start and run a business of her choice, participate in business plan competitions and sell her products throughout the tri state area and beyond. She continued making and selling jewelry throughout high school as a way to further explore style and creativity as well as earn money. During this time Sydney also completed a garment construction certification course through Moore College Of Art & Design located in
Philadelphia.
While studying communications at Mercer County Community College Sydney quickly rediscovered her passion for jewelry design. She decided to expand her maker roots and reintroduce her Jewelry brand as Sydney Sol. This rebrand included her wire wrapped Gold'N Nefertiti Hoops and leather stacked chokers which quickly became best sellers on her website, later opening the door for collaborations with several community based programs as a jewelry instructor for local youth, including the Very Important People program through Mercer County Community College in
Trenton, NJ where she supported youth in grades 6-12 in mindfulness jewelry making and art therapy classes by constructing a safe space for students to express themselves through jewelry making which aided in regulating the nervous system and allowing students to create unapologetically. Sydney also assisted Philadelphia based students
in jewelry making through CORA services where she created an 8 week curriculum for students in grades 6-9 that went hand in hand with their entrepreneurial spring and summer program. Students were supported in building upon their interests and creating small collections to be sold through their seasonal marketplace.
In 2017 Sydney enrolled in metal smithing classes at Brooklyn metal works to build upon her self taught history. She was led to explore metal smithing by her curiosity and love for texture/ design. She also wanted to expand as a maker without limitations. While learning, she found a way to combine her passion for travel and art. Bell began solo traveling to many countries including China and Mexico to source materials and to gain inspiration. The goal of the solo adventures is to face her fears and push past social norms while exploring new places and documenting different cultures which aids in expanding her voice as an artist. In her latest collection she is using her craft to hold space for herself and others while telling stories of black women, solo travel, fearlessness and self discovery through metalwork/wearable art and documentary style video. Her influences stem from the level of resourcefulness that shows up in her work. Being from Trenton is a huge part of her storytelling and artistry
