Mr. Evans is a national End Jim Crow 2022 Poetry Award Winner as well as a McCarter Theater 2022 Bake-off Play Award Winning Playwright. In February 2023 he was the feature Poet for N.J. Governor Murphy’s black history event at the Governor’s mansion. He has won several other poetry slams and awards. Mr. Evans has published a short novel entitled, Staggerlee Booker T. and Me by FavorTwoU Publications. His latest self-published book is entitled A Rose for Ruby. In addition, he has published five other chapbooks and poetry books. Mr. Evans has been featured in the Courier Post, Philadelphia Inquirer, Burlington County Times, and the Trenton Times.
Mr. Evans founded the Willingboro Open Mic and the Don Evans’ Players Theater Group in Willingboro, NJ over 11 years ago. He has the distinction of hosting two of the longest running open mics in New Jersey, more than 10 years: The Willingboro Open Mic, Willingboro, NJ, and Classics Books Open Mic, Trenton N.J. In addition, Mr. Evans hosts Freedom Fridays Open Mic at the Trenton City Museum. Mr. Evans has hosted other events in the tri-state area.
Mr. Evans resides in southern New Jersey with his wife. They have two sons and three grandchildren. Mr. Evans is a retired community youth football, baseball, and basketball coach of more than 30 years of service. He attended Morgan State University and is a graduate of BCC and BCIT.
