By 1864, the group of women who were caring for returning Civil War veterans in temporary storefronts along Water Street quickly realized that they needed more space. But a new permanent home required money. Lots of it. So in the summer of 1865, they would throw a fair — a fair we're still talking about more than 150 years later. That's on the next episode of our digital series, "The Women Founders: Milwaukee Soldiers Home."
The producers of the digital series, The Women Founders: Milwaukee Soldiers Home, would like to thank the Civil War Museum in Kenosha as well as the Wisconsin Club in Milwaukee for allowing us to film part of this series at their locations. We would also like to thank the Milwaukee Soldiers Home for being so hospitable to us throughout the production of this series.
