The Apostle Paul’s teaching about salvation as a free gift was a problem for some. It seemed too easy and open to abuse. Furthermore, if salvation is a free gift without merit, what leverage could church leaders have to manipulate people? How could they regulate people's lives to live righteously? One must admit that historically, the fear of punishment and a raw sense of duty have worked pretty well to control the lives of millions, including the apostle himself in his former life. Paul seeks to explain how people who have been saved by grace will actually behave more righteously, not less.
