Gina Christian of OSV News catches you up on the Catholic news of the day for April 26, 2025 -- the day the church and the world said farewell to Pope Francis. Over 200,000 filled St. Peter's Square for the papal funeral, with presider Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, dean of the College of Cardinals, describing the late pontiff as "a pope among the people, with an open heart toward everyone." American pilgrims shared the liturgy was profoundly moving, whether attended in person or viewed online. Ahead of the Mass, President Donald Trump and Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met in St. Peter's Basilica. A motorcade through Rome amid cheering crowds marked the late pope's final journey to the Basilica of St. Mary Major, where he had requested to be buried. Cardinal Christophe Pierre, papal nuncio to the U.S, told OSV News the late pope can't be "cloned," and that faithful need "the possibility of an encounter with Christ."
