We recently began binging a new to us show, the United Shades of America with W. Kamau Bell and in the 3rd season he goes to the Low Country to meet the Gullah people.
While there he learns about Robert Smalls, an enslaved man who stole a ship and sailed his family and friends to freedom. But Roberts tale is a small part of a much larger fight against colonization and enslavement. One that often gets buried in the tales of the indigenous fight against colonization.
Which is a common tactic by white supremacist, pit the brown folks against each other. But this episode is just one that highlights the way enslaved folks and indigenous folks were able to work together for the betterment of all their people.
