My name is David and the Chronological Bible reading for September 26th is Nehemiah chapters 1 through 5. Yesterday we read in Ezra chapter 7 that he and his entourage came to Jerusalem in the seventh year of King Artaxerxes. Nehemiah is in the twentieth year, so there's a 13 year gap between these two men.

Nehemiah is serving as cup bearer to the king.

and receives an update from someone who is just traveling back from Jerusalem. The update is not good in verse three. The Jews in Jerusalem are not doing well. They are in great trouble and disgrace. The wall has been broken down and the gates burned. When Nehemiah heard this,

When Nehemiah heard this, he did exactly what all of us would do when we are faced with news that disappoints and disheartens and leaves our souls unsettled.

He sat down.

He sat down and wept and mourned for a number of days with fasting and prayer.

before the God of the heavens. He humbled himself and confessed the sins of his people in the same way that Ezra did and Daniel had before him. He began praying the scriptures as recorded in verse nine, God, you said, if you return to me and carefully observe my commands,

Even though your exiles were banished, I will gather them from there and bring them to the place where I chose to have my name dwell." He closes his prayer by asking God for success and asking for compassion in the presence of the King.

Persian law allowed for the king to execute anyone who offended him in any way. So it was dangerous to say the least for someone to go to the king's throne room uninvited and show any kind of negative emotion.
