Construction is the UK’s largest industry.  Football is the country’s largest sport.  There are many similarities between the two, one of which is the cultural change that has permeated both areas of our life over the last thirty years.  The recent wins by England’s Lionesses football team in the 2025 Euros was perhaps the biggest indication of change in football culture as the whole nation got behind the team and celebrated their success.  Construction might learn from this and celebrate the successes of the women in the industry, if we want to continue the cultural change within construction.

Lewes Football Club was the first club in the world to elevate their women’s team salary budget to the same level as their men’s budgets, catapulting them into the limelight and showing what a community led football club was capable of doing.  Karen Dobres was a Director at the club when these changes were started and was instrumental in driving the change through the club.  She talks on this podcast about the experiences, the reasons and facilitators for these changes and the benefits to the club, their players, supporters and visitors and their reputation.

Listen to this podcast if you want to hear how a different sector has tackled inequality.  Hear how leadership and a constant pressure to address inequality has led to a worldwide reputation and being voted the best away-day football location in the UK.  Listen to the advice from someone who has been there on some of the areas that construction might address if they are to better reflect their communities and encourage the diversity necessary to succeed.
