The construction industry needs hundreds of thousands to join its ranks over the next decade. These recruits will come from many walks of life, but the vast majority will have to come straight from school or university. Do we know what excites this generation? What skills do they come with and what does the school do to facilitate the adoption of essential skills? What can industry do to support these students and encourage them into our sector?
Simon Evans is the head of department for Design Technology at a large London secondary school, teaching from 11 to 18 year olds design technology and food. He started in industry and moved to education when Government was looking for DT teachers in the early 1990s. Simon is very positive about his subjects and about the students who he teaches, believing that they are teachable and that with the right direction and support they will go on to grace any employer.
Listen to the podcast if you want to better understand the educator and employer boundary and how students have to traverse this gulf. Listen to gain a better understanding of how DT fits within a school’s curriculum and how a passionate and experienced educational leader believes that industry can make a difference. (It is simple and starts with a bold poster that can be presented regularly to his students!) Simon also talks about the importance of providing work experience opportunities and coming into schools to talk through the jobs, and salaries, that are available within our sector.
