Description

Jesus has been teaching in the synagogue of Capernaum, and remember, the majority of this audience are people from the feeding of the 5,000. With the words of His teaching, Jesus has led them from seeking a fresh new meal for the morning, to having them ask (literally demand) that He always give them the bread which cures hunger indefinitely. But when He tells them HE is the bread, they don’t like that one bit. And just like a great Rabbi, when they grumble because they don’t like what He is saying, He keeps going and makes it even harder for them to accept. He says four times: eat my flesh and drink my blood and you will have eternal life.

“This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?” This was the reaction of the disciples, most likely asked by Peter, as they were leaving the synagogue in Capernaum. A hard teaching to accept. In the Greek it’s literally: “This is a difficult doctrine to understand or believe? Who is going to listen to this?”
