Description

The drone revolution is happening right before our eyes. At the 2025 Drone Fest in Palm Springs, we witnessed firsthand how these remarkable flying machines have transformed from simple toys to industry-changing technology creating high-paying careers across virtually every sector.

Michaela Galler, a remarkable 19-year-old with certifications in gliders, single-engine aircraft, and drones, shares her journey from a discovery flight at 15 to winning bronze at the Drone Soccer World Cup. Her story exemplifies how determination and scholarship opportunities can launch aviation careers for young people passionate about flight. When discussing an in-air emergency during a solo flight, she credits her training: "My instructor's lessons kicked in immediately" – a powerful reminder that proper education creates confident aviators.

The festival showcased drone soccer, an electrifying international sport combining strategy, technology and teamwork. We spoke with FIDA representatives who've built a global competition with member organizations in 20 countries and counting. What began in Korea in 2016 has exploded into a worldwide phenomenon, engaging students from elementary school through college while teaching STEM concepts, problem-solving, and collaboration.

Educators like William Carr and Dr. Javier Ayala are revolutionizing how we prepare students for tech careers. From Palm Springs school districts integrating drones into curriculum to Grossmont College's groundbreaking drone technology program (California's first), these pioneers are creating accessible pathways to lucrative careers. As Ayala notes, "Students can get training that would cost $20,000 elsewhere completely free."

Perhaps most exciting is the diversity emerging within the industry. Desi Eckstein, the "Drone Diva," has spearheaded initiatives bringing more women into drone technology. Female participation has grown from 2% to nearly 10% industry-wide, with some programs reaching 30% – a number expected to climb as barriers continue falling.
