In March 1979, the quiet neighborhood of Highland Park in Richmond, Virginia became ground zero for one of the most disturbing crime sprees in American history. Three brothers—Linwood, James, and Anthony Briley—transformed from helpful neighbors who mowed lawns and fixed cars into ruthless predators who hunted human beings for sport.
What makes the Briley brothers' story particularly chilling is the stark contrast between their public personas and private depravity. These young men, known for their politeness and helpfulness, harbored a darkness that would ultimately claim at least eleven lives over seven horrifying months. Their victims ranged from a 20-year-old vending machine serviceman to elderly women in their 70s—each killed with increasing brutality and seeming randomness.
The brothers' crime spree showed no pattern, no consistency. They simply drove through Richmond looking for opportunities to rob, rape, and murder. Mary Gowan, a beloved 76-year-old babysitter, was followed home, sexually assaulted, robbed, and killed. Blanche Page and Charles Gardner were attacked with such savagery that Charles was stabbed repeatedly with knives, scissors, and even a fork before their home was set ablaze. The brothers' final atrocity involved executing a pregnant woman, her boyfriend, and her five-year-old son.
Their capture came only when teenage accomplice Duncan Meekins, fearing for his own life, turned against them. But even imprisonment couldn't contain the Briley brothers, who staged one of the largest death row escapes in American history in 1984, remaining at large for three weeks before being recaptured. Linwood and James eventually met their end in Virginia's electric chair, while Anthony remains imprisoned to this day.
This episode examines how evil can wear a friendly face, how the most monstrous impulses can hide behind normal appearances, and how a city learns to heal after experiencing true horror. Join us as we explore the darkness that can lurk behind closed doors, even in the most seemingly ordinary families.
