Description

I began the descent by selecting a low gear which helped a bit,  but the old KM  6 cylinder motor was lacking compression when pulling....... never mind trying to slow the 16ton vehicle.

Jabbing and releasing the brakes is the recommended method of allowing the brakes a ‘breather’ to try and keep cool; when they get too hot they cease to grip!

I was jabbing steadily then as the hill got steeper, more often; before long I had to keep the brakes on for longer intervals. The hill seemed endless and my speed gradually increasing.

Whitby is a small compact town with very narrow street approaching an even narrower bridge over the harbour narrows and juts before approaching the long quayside and harbour entrance.

At one stage as there seemed nothing else I could do to slow the vehicle and its smelly, fishy load, I could picture the whole thing embedded in a shop corner in one of the narrow street.
