I decided to hire four wheel box vans, with as big capacity boxes as possible.
The Uniroyal manager at Leeds organised the lorry hire from Salford Van Hire in Leeds and we provided some of the drivers.
We decided it would be best to travel in convoy for safety and give us more “clout” when we encounter any Trade Union Pickets, we were informed that a picket line was in action outside the Uniroyal factory.
The four wheelers carried a much smaller load than our usual 40 foot artic deliveries, but they were quicker and easier to load and unload.
The Tyne Tunnel episode was down to me, I had volunteered to drive on one of these journeys and it was while coming through the Tyne Tunnel southbound that I knocked one of the Tunnel pay kiosks off its “pedestal”.
