Description

I like to start every signing appointment the same way. In this episode, we go through the basics of the processes that occur after you've rung the doorbell. How to introduce yourself, choose a signing surface, pick a seat, and ask for ID. Plus, what ID's are even acceptable or expected of you. I include the script I use during journaling, as well as the one I use to kick off each appointment.

Episode Highlights:
1:07 Some notaries carry folding tables and chairs in the trunk of their car for those occasions when the borrower or signing location does not have one available.

7:08 Ask any seasoned loan signing agent, and they’ll have a few dozen stories about the interesting homes they have visited over the years. We’ve seen it all: hoarders, the “cat lady,” pet pigs, the “dog man,” and every signing surface imaginable-clean or otherwise. For every one of these bizarre scenarios, there are one hundred normal, clean and tidy signing locations.

18:18 As Notary Signing Agents, do not ever make copies of Military ID’s, certain Government ID’s, or Common Access Cards (CAC’s). According to Title 18, U.S. Code Part I, Chapter 33, Section 701, and this is punishable by fine and imprisonment. If these are presented as a Primary Form of ID, you can still add the information from the ID to the Patriot Act form, but do not accept or take an image of the ID.

Your journal is one of the most important components of your role as a Notary Public. When done properly, your journal serves as your memory, documenting relevant circumstances surrounding an appointment. This helps better protect you and your signers, and there are two new journals I recommend for your consideration.

In most states, including California, Jurat, Inc.’s new Notary eJournal is an exciting and more efficient way to journal. With a special add-on device, it even digitally captures fingerprints. I’ve negotiated an incredible deal for you if you’d like to try it out. Click here for details: https://www.notarycoach.com/ejournal
