Maybe you're like me and you're matching energy all 2020.
We've all seen the quotes floating around warning people of how they should "keep that same energy" when the tables turn or of how we're "matching energy", giving them only what they give us. And I have to admit that adapting that frame of mind is tempting. A lot of us can relate because no one wants to be played, played with or taken advantage of.
In this episode I tell a story of when I was heavily into matching other people's energy and how I am stopping myself from going down that same path these days. The truth is ultimately it did more harm than good for me.
Listen in to hear why and how.
You know who this reminded me of?
Abigail. When David was on the run from King Saul, he and his men were in the neighborhood of this rich guy Nabal. It was a time of celebration, Nabal had plenty and David sent word asking Nabal to share some of his resources. He was basically calling in a favor since he and his men had protected Nabal's sheep and shepherds a while back.
Well Nabal was mean and surly, disrespectful and ungrateful. He asked “who is this David? Who does he think he is?”, along with some other insults. Like, he went in on David. In front of David’s boys. He had no intention of helping David and didn’t care about what happened in the past. This was now.
The messengers came back and told David what Nabal had said .
“Get your swords” was his reply as he strapped on his own. David was about that life. He was about that matching energy life. He squadded up 400 men and they were going to see Nabal.
When she learned about what was about to go down, Abigail, Nabal's wife, acted wisely and quickly and ultimately saved Her husband and his household from David's wrath. She made peace and basically convinced David to match her energy.
You can read all about this story in 1 Samuel 25:20-35 (NLT).
If you’re like me, you still struggle with not matching the negative energy of others, with not making them feel like they don’t matter to you, or like they can’t hurt you, or worse like their dead to you. But we must fight that urge. We’re leveling up to look more like Christ, after all, not dumbing ourselves down and dimming our lights to look more like the world. Instead let’s be our own Abigails, shining light of love, peace and good sense into our darkened, hardened hearts and those of our enemies so that they might wake up and match our energy as we match Christ’s. Let's match God's energy all 2020 (and beyond).
