Welcome to the Premiere of ShatterCast, Season 2!
Recently, one of our viewers asked us to give our thoughts on a recent news story. After discussing in our team we realized this topic was something we were very passionate about and was very personal to us. We thought the discussion was so important that we decided to do some quick edits and make this our premiere episode.
Take a deep breath, here is the story so far to the best of our research...
A few weeks ago Activision Blizzard made news when they decided to penalize a player who made a brief statement supporting the protests in Hong Kong. Blizzard was met with almost instant fan outrage for the perceived severity of their punishment, for what seemed like a double-standard when other players based in the U.S. expressed similar support of Hong Kong, and their actions received the attention of international news organizations and even congressional leaders in the U.S.
Activision Blizzard has since decreased the penalty of the original player and has now penalized the U.S. based players in a similar fashion. However, it still has led to many people still being unhappy with Blizzard and some even boycotting their games. At the center of the controversy is the concern that Blizzard acted in such a way because of outside pressure they may have felt.
Did Blizzard go too far with their original actions? And how do we respond when we have a choice to make but might feel outside pressure as well? How often in our own lives are we willing to stand up for what we believe is "right" even when we might feel like we may be standing alone?
