Named after the Elton John song “Daniel” it was inevitable that music would play a big part in Dan’s life as it has and in a very positive way
I met Dan in the early noughties when I was running Public Sector for Microsoft UK. Dan was a young, fresh faced contractor with lots of energy and commitment and with a real desire to join Microsoft as a full-time employee. I am proud that I was able to give him that opportunity, I just wish I’d done it sooner!
Over time, Dan and I bonded and built a friendship around music, and that continued when he moved to Seattle in 2014. That move has allowed him to indulge his passions around music, cars, sailing and travel whilst advancing his career, He now has a lovely house in Alki with a view over the Puget Sound that I will always be slightly envious of.
No profile of Dan would be complete without reference to the deep love he has for what he calls “His Crows”. Dan has a wide-ranging taste in music as can be seen in the 71 songs in this episodes playlist (yes, that’s the biggest ever!) . But in amongst all of that there is a love and a passion for the Counting Crows that I absolutely identify with. He has now seen them live 34 times across numerous states and countries and they will always be the soundtrack to his life.
In Dan’s view “Rain King” is the ultimate Crows song and it’s appropriately one of his song choices and the name of this episode.
