155 – Jesus spoke Aramaic in the New Testament
Is there any advantage to learning Aramaic to understand his teachings better?
Of course!
In this week's podcast episode, I talk with Roy Gessford about the insights we can get from reading the New Testament translated from Aramaic.
Roy got interested in the original languages of the Bible when a speaker at a Bible conference told him he could learn these ancient languages.
His first research said it was a dead language. But he quickly learned it was not.
Roy shared some examples of how Aramaic has given him a better understanding of what a particular passage in the Bible means. He refers to
- When the devil tempts Jesus to turn the stone into bread
- The line in the Lord's prayer about God's will being done on earth
- Getting a deeper understanding of Jesus's mindset that God's healing power is here today just as it was then
- He shares a healing he had because of the conviction he found in Jesus's words
- In John 21, the word play with the words lamb and sheep when Jesus tells Peter three times to tend his flock.
