Eragon (Ed Speleers), a poor farm boy, lives in Alagaesia, a kingdom ruled by Galbatorix (John Malkovich), a powerful but evil monarch. One day, Eragon discovers a beautiful stone that he soon realizes is a dragon's egg. When the creature hatches, Eragon sets forth on a path that could restore the glory of his homeland's legendary Dragon Riders and perhaps overthrow Galbatorix - Google.
To this day Eragon is the only film I have ever stopped watching after 20 minutes because it was so bad and frustrating. We covered it for this Fantasy season of the podcast and I will never watch the film again. It was released in 2006 which was the year after Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire was released. I bring that up to emphasise that the industry was in the middle of loving fantasy films so it is confusing why this film was made so poorly, almost intentionally. Christopher Paolini created a beautiful world that we would have liked to explore more which is why we read the entire Inheritance Cycle. This series could have been the next global phenomenon but as a sequel has not be produced in the 14 years since the Eragon film was released, it is apparent that this is not the case. Have a listen to this fortnight's episode of Chapter One: Take Two to find out more.
