A recurring theme that has come up around black women lately is the pressure to always be on. The phrase “always on” means something is always active, operating or powered. In technology it refers to things that are expected to have continuous connection or be consistently accessible. In human terms, always being on is too tiring to even think about. However, in our day to day lives that is how some of us operate. Always on in some capacity when in mixed company and corporate spaces. Our minds are full of what to say, what not to say, how to say it, how we’ll be perceived, is it a stereotype etc. That constant flow of thought coupled with stressful or even hostile situations can lead to blow ups, break downs and other out of character actions when you least expect it.
