As women, society often tells us we are less than, undeserving, or out of line. As black women, we are bombarded by this message and then some. Not only are we minimized for our gender, but we are excluded from our race. Every day is a war. We constantly fight through the subliminal and downright explicit narrative that we’re at the bottom. While this happens in every aspect of our lives, it can be most apparent at work. The fear of our own perceived shortcomings is only magnified by the weight of being the breadwinner or the spouse with better health benefits. Held to a different standard than the Karens and Jeffs of the world, we begin to doubt our actual abilities, skills, and intelligence. If that weren’t enough, our efforts to persevere are often rewarded by being underpaid, overlooked, and overworked further creating doubt in our potential to succeed. Today we want to discuss Imposter Syndrome and how to take steps to combat it.
