Why does an all loving, all powerful and all-knowing God allow suffering? While God is not the cause of suffering, He did allow suffering to enter the world. God is love and He wanted to share that love with us. In order for us to respond to that love, we need the freedom God gave us in order to choose love. Through that freedom, sin entered the world. According to St Pope John Paul II, suffering is inseparable from man’s earthly experience, and it remains and will remain a question and challenge for humanity. St Pope John Paul II also says “But in order to perceive the true answer to the ‘why’ of suffering, we must look to the revelation of divine love, the ultimate source of the meaning of everything that exists.” God asks us to trust that He can bring meaning to our suffering even if we do not see the meaning in this life.
