The Trans community has been under attack essentially since its inception. Sometimes people are fearful of what they don't understand. Often fear leads us to being cruel because it gives us a pass from having to be introspective. We can project our insecurity, our distaste, onto others because we are uncomfortable with what's different. Trans people are people. Let's try to see people on a human level first. Why would we want everyone in the world to be the same? It would be a pretty boring world if that was the case.
This week on The Allegory and Elm Podcast we have Indigo Sterling (Amy Smith) who is an author, mother, and transgender equality advocate. She is joined by her husband Kevin Smith who is an entrepreneur and local business owner. They share the story of their transgender daughter who is 9, and her experience within the school system. Amy and Kevin are activists for the transgender community and they share their personal experiences advocating for their daughter and the transgender community at large. If you want to purchase the book Yes, My Brother Wears a Dress or find out more about Emma's story, check out Indigo Sterling's website. I think the book is amazing!! This was an education for Katie and Andrew as we both don't have a lot of experience with the transgender community. We were so glad to get educated, but also a bit disheartened about how marginalized the transgender community has been and currently still are treated. We have the ability to change that, by educating ourselves, and by speaking out against hate.
If you are in the process of questioning ANYTHING, please reach out. Whether it is a paradigm you've lived by that no longer serves you, or ways of thinking that just don't honor who you want to be, REACH OUT! We would love to have a conversation about this as we are still very much in process.
