Episode 38 (Thomas McCollum)

This week the boys were joined by current ECHL player for the Adirondack Thunder, Mike Szmatula. Smats takes us through the roadmap of his incredible hockey journey, and we’ve only scratched the surface. He played in three different junior leagues in three years and never had an issue finding the back of the net. In his final junior season, he won a Clark Cup with the Dubuque Fighting Saints of the USHL. Following that season, Smats went off to Northeastern University, where he played in the famous Beanpot tournament. This was a special Beanpot since it was played outdoors at Fenway Park! After two years at Northeastern, Mike transferred to University of Minnesota to finish out his final two years of college hockey. After his senior season concluded at Minnesota, he went to the ECHL to play for his current team, the Adirondack Thunder. He also describes getting the call up to play in the AHL for the Utica Comets and Stockton Heat for a few games. Make sure to follow Smats to keep up with his hockey journey!
