It can be so easy to substitute true happiness with a new purchase. Spending money on material things is the easier path to go with making yourself happy, rather than actually dealing with the problem or issue. But it's never long-lasting.
Show Notes:
- It’s not a great habit. It’s actually a really bad habit because if you over do it, you might run out of money to pay your actual bills & cover other needs.
- But spending money feels like such an easy, quick fix, doesn’t it? You can just walk into Target, take 10 steps in any direction, find something you don’t need, but can talk yourself into wanting & and buy it because it feels nice to have something new.
- It feels nice & good to have new things because it can prevent you from focusing on what the real problems are in your life. Little distractions, even treating yourself to a Starbucks, can temporarily take up some time in your life that would be better served working through your struggles. But that’s the hard way, which isn’t as fun as the easy way, spending money. This can even be seen in making a point to spend tons of money on other people, especially if you are a people pleaser. You want to shower someone else in gifts, create happiness for them, believing that will in turn, make you happy.
- Spending money creates this validation that you can be happy because you were able to buy a new thing that puts a temporary smile on your face. It’s the temporary feeling of happiness that draws us in.
- But I also want to mention the idea of spending money because of boredom or loneliness. Sometimes you don’t have the courage to make new friends, so it’s easier to just go buy new things. Maybe you feel like your life is at a standstill or an overwhelming crossroads & you just don’t want to deal with it, so shopping it is! Or even feeling like you’ve been abandoned or ignored, so you decide to buy yourself some new friends, like clothes, home decor or maybe a new phone.
- There are an endless amount of reasons or excuses for why we spend money to secure temporary happiness, but no matter how much we buy & spend, it doesn’t get better for the future. There is no long term benefit. Except for a bunch of things you might need to throw away someday.
- Today I want to specifically talk about some reasons why trying to buy happiness isn’t going to work:
- 1. There will always be something new. The spend will never end. And someone else will always have more.
- 2. It’s a distraction from what is really going on.
- 3. You won’t always impress others with your purchases.
- 4. More crap makes more clutter and makes more stress.
- 5. Things aren’t the answer, but an experience could help.
