Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!
Thank you so much for joining me again!
This week's theme for the podcast is: Be Your Own Mentor
This week I want to talk to share with you how you can be your own mentor!
Mentoring yourself is easier than it sounds. By taking certain steps to understand yourself better, improve on what you feel is lacking & committing to learning & encouraging yourself more, you will be on your way to bettering yourself & igniting personal growth.
Here are some notes from today's episode:
- It always starts with a list. Everyone always wants you to make a list, 2 columns, & sit down & think about what you are strong at & what you are weak at. But there are never guided questions. There aren’t any hints to help you think of anything deep (except the whole thing about making your strengths into weaknesses) & I’m pretty sure most of the time these lists aren’t really helpful, unless you spend a while deeply thinking about it. Being actually honest with yourself is necessary to have usable results.
- Anytime I think about my strengths & weaknesses, I go blank. I can’t really come up with the strengths that I feel confident about because I struggle with my self-esteem & self-worth. Naming weaknesses is easy, because most people don’t have a problem picking apart the negative parts about them, but the positives, the strengths, are much harder.
- To be honest with you, for me, I’m truly afraid to admit most strengths I have because I’m so insecure. I feel insignificant & don’t think I have the power to identify any strengths about myself. Again, it’s a self-worth problem.
- It’s a vicious circle to live in & one I am trying to break out of often. I’m making progress.
- Discovering your strengths & weaknesses is important to be your own mentor. It’s great to know what you excel in & what you should spend more time getting stronger at. These are the things that will help you excel in your life & what will continue to drive you to be a lifelong learner.
- Knowing your strength & weaknesses gives you a better idea of your resourcefulness & shortcomings, which also aids in creating better plans to go after your goals, cut back on experiences that might not benefit you & have a better idea on how to navigate your journey.
- Let’s talk about some tips of how to identify your strength & weaknesses:
- 1. Create a list, but with 4 columns. Have one for natural strengths, one for natural weaknesses, one for learned strengths & one for learned weaknesses (observed behaviors, taught wrong things).
- 2. Ask someone you trust for feedback.
- 3. Ask yourself deeper questions to help weed out the less significant strengths & weaknesses. Here is a shortlist of examples:
- A. What was the happiest day of your life?
- B. What do others consistently compliment you on?
- C. What energizes you?
- D. What drains your energy?
- E. What do you wish you could change about yourself?
- F. What do you typically procrastinate on?
- G. What’s your biggest failure?
Please share this podcast with anyone that may need this encouragement!
