Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!
Thank you so much for joining me again!
Happy Friday!
This week's theme for the podcast is: Cognitive Distortions
This week I want to talk about 5 specific Cognitive Distortions & how these thought patterns affect us on the daily.
Cognitive distortions are unhealthy ways of thinking that can cause your mind to spin out of control. These can also lead to increased anxiety & depression.
More specifically it would be irrational & exaggerated thoughts that are highly based in negative thoughts. And a lot of times this thought pattern is habitual, which creates more problems as time goes on because this type of behavior isn’t helpful in the least.
Here are some notes from today's episode:
- We are ending the week talking about magnifying & minimizing. Magnifying is making small experiences, like making a mistake or forgetting to do something into the biggest deal ever. And minimizing is taking anything that is big & meaningful, like an achievement, and making it seem like the smallest, insignificant thing.
- Simply, they will blow their problems out of proportion & minimize how important the positive parts of their lives are.
- So with magnifying, it can be very common for someone to pick apart everything tiny thing that may have gone wrong in an experience, like messing up on a speaking engagement or presentation. But they can also be practicing minimizing by not acknowledging how well it went & how much everyone else enjoyed it.
- Magnifying can also really increase your stress & anxiety because the bigger & bigger you make these problems, the more it becomes overwhelming to you. And with minimizing, by not making anything of all the positive things happening in your life, you will lack in self-worth, confidence & appreciation for all the wonderful experiences.
- It’s seems that those suffering from panic & anxiety & perfectionism will really struggle with both of these because panic really takes hold of people & becomes too much to understand, but don’t want to point to the good things because it wasn’t good enough & believed deserves to be overshadowed by the mistakes.
- So let’s chat about what we can do to cut back on both of these behaviors:
- 1. You’re not perfect.
- 2. You’re worthy of praise & acknowledgement
- 3. Create a place to let those negative thoughts out.
