Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!
Thank you so much for joining me again!
Happy Thursday!
This week's theme for the podcast is: Cognitive Distortions
This week I want to talk about 5 specific Cognitive Distortions & how these thought patterns affect us on the daily.
Cognitive distortions are unhealthy ways of thinking that can cause your mind to spin out of control. These can also lead to increased anxiety & depression.
More specifically it would be irrational & exaggerated thoughts that are highly based in negative thoughts. And a lot of times this thought pattern is habitual, which creates more problems as time goes on because this type of behavior isn’t helpful in the least.
Here are some notes from today's episode:
- Personalization is a cognitive distortion that really lays it on thick with the negative self-doubt & self-talk.
- Those struggling with personalization will take everything that someone says & does as a direct criticism & response to who they are.
- It’s those that are so caught up in their own mistakes, shortcomings that get let personalization lead the way. They use those negative experiences to define who they are. Which is obviously not what you want to do & it’s important to note that no experience defines who you are. It’s just not true.
- Taking everything personally & not realizing that other people’s reactions toward us has a lot more to do with them than it does with you. And if you don’t know that now, you need to. It also has to do with heavily comparing yourself to others & deciding that other people are better or smarter than you & putting yourself down on the regular.
- Making everything so personal to you is not only unrealistic, but really selfish. Why in the world would everything that others do have something to do with you? Why can’t it just be about them or just a random reaction? Insecurities are obviously in play here.
- Let’s chat about some ways we can work on personalizing everything so much:
- 1. Accept you’re not perfect.
- 2. Stop caring about what others think about you.
- 3. Don’t jump to conclusions. A lot of what others say, even about you, are projections from themselves.
- 4. Don’t feed into the negativity. Don’t respond with negativity. Don’t feed into that trap.
