Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!
Thank you so much for joining me again!
Happy Tuesday!
This week's theme for the podcast is: Stop Doing These Things
This week I am going to be chatting about some behaviors & mindsets I encourage you to stop indulging in & practicing.
I know it can be super easy to get caught up in certain behaviors that are normal to us & that we are in the habit of doing often, but it’s important to realize what behaviors & mindsets that we are engaged in that aren't really helping us & causing us more harm or setbacks.
Here are some notes from today's episode:
- Obviously I had to speak on being a perfectionist in my list of things for us all to stop doing because it’s such a prevalent problem many of us struggle with.
- I have battled being a perfectionist since childhood. As an only child to my single dad, there was an expectation for me to be as perfect as possible, because he had the ability to show everyone up that he could crush it as a single dad.
- I get it, you want to impress everyone on how well you raised your child alone, but it was tough. The expectation to be perfect for me was treating me like a token or a trophy. And I know that isn’t everyone’s experience.
- Usually perfectionism come from pressure we put on ourselves or pressure from someone else that just wants things done a certain way, despite how you may feel about that.
- So let’s go over a few ways that perfectionism develops.
- Perfectionism is a learned behavior that can develop from the fear of letting someone down or disapproval from others. It can also stem from insecurity & inadequacy.
- The main belief for those suffering from perfectionism is that they are only valuable because of their achievements or what they do for other people.
- In addition to that, they can hold themselves to crazy high standards & believe they never truly hit the mark or perfection. It’s truly a never ending road of defeat.
- If you are on the fence on whether or not you are struggling from perfectionism, here are some common symptoms:
- Feeling like you fail at everything you try, regular procrastination, struggle to relax & share your thoughts/feelings, are controlling in personal & professional relationships & obsession with lists, rules & work.
- After identifying what perfectionism is & how it can manifest, let’s mention some ways to overcome it. And know that nothing is a magic solution, but always something that will help you progress with success overtime.
- I’m going to share with you 6 steps to help you overcome perfectionism:
- Step 1: Identify the Underlying Beliefs that Drive Your Perfectionism
- Step 2: Accept that Everyone Makes Mistakes
- Step 3: Create Realistic Goals & Expectations for Yourself & Others
- Step 4: Practice Saying ‘No’ More
- Step 5: Challenge Your Inner Critic\Know You’re Enough
- Step 6: Take Breaks & Practice Relaxing
