Hello Everyone & Welcome to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!
Today on the show I am talking about: These Things Don't Define You
It's so easy to hold onto any negative experiences or feelings & believe those things define you because it was so traumatic or life-changing that you believe it's all you are.
But those things, like your family or past mistakes, don't define who you are or what you're all about. Only you can decide what defines you.
Today I am chatting about some common beliefs that people get caught up in believing define them.
Here are some notes from today's episode:
- A lot of times we will take on the burden of what has happened in our past & put that on us as who we are & our future. We will believe that the things we had to go through, the people & their influence in our lives & our mistakes are what make us into the person we are. We believe that all this crap is who we are because we just absorb it without considering anything else that makes up who we are.
- Today I wanted to talk through a few different, common beliefs that people get confused with, because it’s important to know these things don’t define you as a person.
- Let’s start with your parents & family, in general. Your family does not define who you are or what you’re all about, even though you grew up with them & are a product of your parents. This is true because despite being raised by these people & around them on the regular, you are not a carbon copy of them.
- You have different interests & passions. You may not agree with how they view the world & sometimes values & beliefs can be different, just based on how you see the world or because you are growing up in a different time of the world & generation.
- But don’t feel the burden that you have to take on your parents or family’s mistakes, ideals or attitudes.
- Another thing that doesn’t define you are your mistakes. Mistakes don’t define who you are, what you’re capable of or even how smart you are. Mistakes are wonderful opportunities to learn, grow & change for the better. And sometimes it feels like these mistakes will follow us around, but that’s we are allowing those past mistakes to have power over us. We need to let go & move forward.
- The next one I want to mention is a big one! What other people think about you doesn’t define you. It’s just their opinion, not facts. And even if it seems like their opinion is an informed, it still doesn’t define you because it’s not facts. It’s not something you have to believe or let hold power over you.
- The last one I want to mention is trauma. Whatever trauma you went through does not define you. Absolutely not. Not even close. Trauma may affect you in ways that will take some time to overcome & work through, but it still doesn’t define you. And one of the best ways to work through whatever trauma you are suffering from is to tell yourself & believe that it doesn’t define who you are & who you will be in the future.
